Here’s a Simple Method to Get the Most Out of Others (and Ultimately Yourself)
Have you ever had a boss or a friend or co-worker who you would do just about anything for? Or maybe you have been fortunate enough to be the boss or coach who had people under your charge who would do nearly anything that you asked of them.
In either case there is a high likelihood that the reason people were willing to go to the wall for you, or you were willing to go to it for them, is a direct result of how they were treated. There are usually three things people do that make you go the extra mile for them:
1) They make you feel cared for.
2) They make you feel appreciated.
3) They make you feel respected.
In the absence of these three things, you will never get as much as you could have out of any relationship you have with people.
As simple as these three are to do (or list here), I have found that their practice is sorely lacking in just about every area of life that I have been privy to. Imagine how much better all areas of your life would be if everyone practiced these three simple things?
Some might say “But not everyone is deserving of respect, appreciation and caring.” I tend to agree, but my response would be that you have to give those things to get them. Perhaps part of the problem is that many people are withholding these things until they get them first.
I have found that if I go out of my way to believe in people (in some cases when there is no apparent reason to do so) they will, more often than not, eventually prove me right. I have worked with many people who I was advised not to get involved with, who have become some of my hardest working, most enjoyable and productive clients.
That said, doing these three things is not a guarantee of success. It’s a two-way street, and I have had clients who have taken my belief in them and hard work for granted, which caused those relationships to end prematurely.
Although it does not guarantee success, practicing these three things does increase your odds of success dramatically. Most everyone has had relationships where they felt unappreciated, therefore losing their enthusiasm and ending up just going through the motions. No one that I am aware of has ever performed at their peak while just going through the motions.
So, I strongly urge you to practice all three of these things in all of your relationships if you want to give them the best chance of being as successful as possible.
